Here are some special accommodation facilities that allow visitors to fully enjoy the charm of each location.

Experiencing the Diversity and Uniqueness of Setouchi
Setouchi AONAGI

In the 19th century, the German Geographer Richthofen referred to the scenery of Setouchi as ”there is no other place like here in the world”. Many Japanese as well as foreign visitors have been drawn to this region, and local accommodation facilities are not shy to boast about the exceptional beauties of their areas. While there are many amazing accommodations, the “Setouchi AONAGI” in Matsuyama City, Ehime prefecture, is currently the most talked about hotel. It is a small-scale, luxury hotel with only 7 rooms and gorgeous facilities such as indoor and outdoor swimming pools and spa, and also offering guests to experience the diversity and uniqueness of the Setouchi region.

The first point worth noting is its architectural design. The hotel was designed by renovating a facility that was partially open to the public as a museum until 2015, and the creator of the former building as well as the designer of the new hotel is the world famous architect, Tadao Ando. Ando has designed many innovative museums, which are highly praised as forms of artistic architecture on neighboring islands, and his projects have helped the Setouchi region to become one of the most famous art destinations in the world. Alike the museums he designed in nearby areas, this hotel was also created to coexist with the surrounding nature of Setouchi. Its simple yet dignified beauty completely matches with the creative atmosphere of the Setouchi region, making it an accommodation facility that is also a piece of artwork by itself.

The hotel is located on a quiet location on top of the mountain with a view of the Setouchi Sea. The scenery of the beautiful waters and rich greenery can be enjoyed from the large windows of the guestrooms and lobby, allowing guests to directly sense the nature of Setouchi even from inside the facility. The view from the outdoor infinity pool, “THE BLUE”, is simply stunning, with the surface of the water in the pool and Setouchi sea displaying magnificent gradations of blue sea and sky.

For dinner, guests are served with the “Setouchi Tabikaiseki” course, consisting of progressive Japanese dishes using rich and seasonal ingredients of the Setouchi region. Each dish is a given name using words that represent the sceneries of Setouchi such as “Nagi” (calmness) and “Dandan-Batake” (terrace fields) so that guests are also able to experience the feeling of touring the region throughout the course.

Experiencing the Hospitality of Hagi at the World Heritage Inn
Hagijo Sannomaru Hokumon Yashiki

The city of Hagi in Yamaguchi prefecture is frequently visited by history lovers. The town distribution of Hagi Castle Town has changed very little since the Edo period, and it is still possible to get around using old maps from that time in history. This historical area was a significant location during the final days of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Meiji Restoration, when the period changed from Edo to Meiji. It is also recognized as a world heritage for playing an important role during the industrial revolution in the Meiji period (Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution). In addition to these there are many other sites worth visiting in this area so densely packed with historical spots, and so it is quite difficult to give a full introduction of Hagi in short.

“Hagijo Sannomaru Hokumon Yashiki” is the only accommodation facility within the world heritage site of the Hagi Castle Town. You can almost imagine that a samurai might come walking from around the corner of the town streets paved between clay and stone walls. The impressive gates of the Hokumon Yashiki that welcome guests resemble the entrances of old samurai residences. This place is located within the premises of an old high-class samurai residence, and the Ryokan was built by the remains of the house of Yashiki Mori, belonging to the Mori Clan that was the feudal lord of this area. This place allows guests to stay in a place that was once the heart of politics and a world which the common people at the time could only dream about visiting.

Once entering the gates, the atmosphere completely changes. A British-style garden with Japanese and Western flowers as well as trees, a patio decorated with ravishing roses, and a Japanese garden are surrounded by 4 uniquely designed buildings, offering views that can be enjoyed according to each season. The guestrooms also have variations, from luxurious Japanese rooms to those with modern design. The patriots in this region during the end of the Edo period accepted Western influences and incorporated what they had learned. This characteristic of blending of both Japanese and Western qualities is what makes Hagi unique, and in the same way this place serves guests with the hospitality of Hagi through combining Japanese comfort and Western grace.

Hagi is also a hot spring area with 8 different springs, and this Ryokan allows guests to enjoy the soft waters of the Hagi Onsen. The most famous bath here is the “Shirakabe no Yu”, a large bath surrounded by white walls and with a view of the historical world heritage. The delicious meals use an abundance of seasonal riches from the Sea of Japan, served on magnificent Hagiyaki dishes.

A Historical Stay at a Machiya Ryokan in the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter
Cuisine Ryokan Tsurugata

Located in Kurashiki City, Okayama prefecture, the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is an area that once flourished during the Edo period as an important destination for the transportation of goods. At the time many boats passed through the Kurashiki River, and old buildings preserved since the Edo period still stand nearby the river. The sight of Machiya (old houses) and warehouses with white walls behind the rows of willow trees create a historical atmosphere, almost feeling as if you’ve wandered into a movie set.

The “Cuisine Ryokan Tsurugata” is an authentic Japanese Ryokan along the Kurashiki River in the Bikan Historical Quarter allowing guests to fully appreciate this unique atmosphere. It is one of the oldest merchant houses of Kurashiki that was built in 1744. The building has a traditional, architectural style of Machiya in the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, with a loft, clay tile roof, Kurashiki window, and latticework. It is practically the same as staying in a historical monument of Kurashiki.

The town also has many historical sights to offer such as girders and pine trees around 400 years old that have been around since the Edo period. Simply wandering through town itself is like time traveling into the Edo period.

The Ryokan is also famous for its exquisite dishes using fresh seafood of Setouchi, specially selected by the head chef. Kaiseki course meals are served in the rooms for dinner, offering the opportunity to enjoy the delightful and authentic food culture in a traditional atmosphere.
